You may have heard of the beautiful Australian plus size model Laura Wells? If not let me give you some inside information that’s not in this interview.

She gives the best hugs. Warm, friendly and totally genuine.

The Asos Curve team love her – and so it would seem do many of the Curvettes that buy from Asos Curve

I nearly didn’t introduce myself to her when she was shooting one day at ASOS HQ. Why? Well, even professionals get star struck and all I could think was *heart pounding* ‘that’s one of my model idols sitting there minding her own business.’ I’m glad I double backed and said hello.

In fact Laura was such a sweetie she emailed me an hour or so after and said how nice it was to meet me and she agreed to do this interview.

It’s been a long time coming because Laura has been jet setting around the world and is currently back in Australia enjoying time with her family as well working her plus size model curves in various fashion shoots.

In this interview Laura Wells and I cover all the bases: – size acceptance, the fashion and size faux pas, her acceptance of herself and many other things.

Sit back and enjoy the girlie chit chat of two very different models with one hope in common – that plus size fashion lives on!

Hi Laura, it’s great to finally touch base with you as we always seem to miss one another when I’m at ASOS doing my fit sessions. How are you?

I’m really well! I’m back in my home country of Australia at the moment; working hard and staying up late to watch the world cup. It’s good to see all my family and friends again even though I have now escaped the London chill to come to home to Sydney winter!

But it’s hot now in London. We turned the heating on for you. Come back! ha ha!

So Laura, you are the face we see on the header when we click onto the Curve section of asos.com . You’re totally rocking that Hawaiian Cocktail Dress!

You have become a favourite with many of the customers who buy from Curve.
Your look and poise really showcases the clothes well. You seem to be a natural born model, but I read that this wasn’t your first choice of career.

How did you get started?

My sister who is a straight size model went to NYC to go see agents about 5 years ago. I went with her and got asked by a few scouts whether I was a plus size model. At that stage of my life I didn’t even know such a model existed and I really had no interest in modelling at all, that was my sisters department and I was busy at university and travelling at the time.

When I got back to Australia I got in contact with BGM models in Sydney, and my agent, Darrianne Donnelly signed my that day. My first job came two weeks later and since then I haven’t looked back.

You’ve always had killer Curves but have you always been confident in showing them off?

When I first starting modelling and at high school I was never really confident with my curves. I also thought of myself as a lot bigger than everyone else, especially my friends, I never really understood that curves were a blessing! Since modelling I have become a lot more aware of my body shape and finally take pride in the fact that I have a curvy body. I dress to show off my curves and am now no longer afraid to do so.

We’re seeing more plus size models getting press these days, but many of the plus size models are fit into standard criteria, do you feel at any point the size definitions will increase?

Just like straight sized models, plus size models too have a standard criteria to fit to. This criteria is different depending upon the country and market but I do think that the plus size criteria will increase as the demand for plus size market increases. Plus size models and the industry have really only just begun and I believe that there is much more room for movement in the years to come. It is definitely exciting and I can’t wait to see what is in store for the plus size industry!

Just recently Australian Designers refused to use plus size models during fashion week. This caused quite a stir. What are your views on that?

In terms of plus size modelling and the clothing industry, Australia has quite a long way to go. The industry in Australia is picking up but seems to be behind Europe and the United States when coming to accept plus models and their role in society.

It was actually quite shocking to learn that this year’s fashion week shunned the plus size model as at last year’s Rosemount fashion week, eighteen plus size models from BGM models, including myself, took to the runway for the first time at Sydney fashion week and were very well received.

I thought the City Chic parade last year had marked the way for a plus size revolution in Australia but sadly it seems the fashion industry itself ignored the praise given by the general public and stayed on the one-eyed path of the straight size model.

Hopefully media attention from the refusal to use plus size girls will change a few attitudes and Australia can pick up where they left off from last year’s parade and hail the ever increasing love society has for the plus size girls!

You’ve been very successful as a plus size model but have you ever felt pressure to lose weight? If so how have you handled that?

No I have never felt any pressure as a plus size model to lose weight. The only time I felt pressure to lose weight was when I was younger and that was mainly pressure I had put on myself to fit in and look like everyone else. If anything I have been asked to put on weight. I’m happy with my weight now. I am at a weight that is probably my natural weight.

I don’t fluctuate and it would actually be difficult for me to lose weight. If I was in a position where I had pressure on me to lose weight I would handle it by assessing my health. If I am within a healthy weight range and am happy with myself and am comfortable with how I feel there is no way I would attempt to lose weight.

Being happy and healthy, I believe, are two of the most important aspects in life and if you have balanced them well you shouldn’t feel pressure from anyone to change that.

You recently shared the catwalk with Crystal Renn for Sheego in Germany. Crystal’s been the most talked about plus size model in the business recently. Was it nerve racking?

I don’t get nervous before parades, so it wasn’t nerve racking. But it was great meeting Crystal. She is so down-to-earth and easy going. We all had a great time and being in the presence of someone that is so well known and respected gives everyone else great positive energy.

Yes, I’ve heard she is a very sweet, down to earth person too, just like you. I’ve always felt in my own modelling career that is an essential key to getting ahead. What do you think?

Everyone has their own personality and reacts to situations differently but I think being down -to-earth is a good quality to have, especially in such a hectic industry.

It is very easy to get wrapped up in the glitz and glamour but having a level head and being open minded really helps you assess the situation and bring you back to reality. It’s always important to be yourself but you have to brace yourself for rejection or you will never get ahead.

Laura let’s talk about your beauty routine as my site visitors here at vanessareece.com also love a bit of beauty chat. What beauty items can’t you live without when you’re travelling as a model?

Travelling definitely takes its toll on your skin so I always have a good moisturiser with me. I think I must look like a freak on the plane sometimes because I am constantly re-applying moisturiser to my face every hour, it’s like obsessive compulsive behaviour! But I know if I don’t do it my skin will break out and that’s not always the best when you jump straight off a 326 hour flight into a shoot!

I have a big supply of cleanser and a strong eye makeup remover on me at all times. Sometimes eye makeup remover can be a life saver, especially when you finish a shoot with crazy makeup and have to get onto public transport (yes we models often take public transport, none of this ‘private drivers’, ha-ha) A little bit of remover can be the difference between you getting a whole lot of strange looks on the tube!

I also carry a concealer/ highlighter pen with me; they are great for covering those unwanted blemishes and adding a bit of sparkle under the eye!!!

You are a super clever Gal. I read you have two degrees. That’s awesome. Do you feel when you change careers you’ll focus on using those in some way?

I finished doing a science degree and also a Law degree a couple of years ago and have taken up modelling full time as it is a career you can’t really put off till later in life, so I thought I would jump straight in and give it a go first.

When I decide to stop modelling, (I suppose that will be when the wrinkles are so large they can no longer retouch them out!!) I would like to pursue my passion of being an environmental scientist. I have a keen interest in the area and would like to make a difference no matter how big or small with regards to the environment and sustainability.

Do you have an exercise routine? I’m a gym and swim Gal myself. What about you?

I try to go to the gym 4-5 times a week and mix it up by doing different classes, but it has been really difficult this year as I have been travelling so much. So when I have been in London I try to walk to most places. I give myself enough time and get off the tube a couple of stops early then walk to my shoot or casting. It worked really well for me considering I couldn’t get to the gym.

I also play soccer and in the summer time I also swim a couple of times of week. I try to stay active and mix up my routine as I have a tendency to get a bit bored doing the same thing each week. By mixing up my exercise routine it keeps me motivated.

Laura we miss you lots already at ASOS! As you’ve said you’re in Australia at the moment. Are you working on something fabulous there and when are you coming back?

Yes I’m in Australia right now but will hopefully be back in London soon. I have a lot of good clients here in Australia and have to spread my schedule between Australia and London to fit everyone in. It can get tiring but I am having a lot of fun at the moment. I have just finished doing a shoot with my sister for Cosmopolitan Magazine so it will be one to keep an eye out for in August.

What have been your favourite ASOS Curve pieces to model?

I love the Asos dresses. They colours are fantastic and they have something for everyone and every event. I also love Asos shoes. I am a shoe lover and they have some great pieces. I think I come away from every shoot wanting to take majority of the garments with me.

When I met you at ASOS not so long ago I have to say you have a really lovely energy about you. What’s your secret on maintaining an upbeat attitude as you seem to show on and off camera?

I think the way to keep an upbeat attitude is to get lots of sleep! You were lucky and meet me after a big nap, ha-ha. I think it just comes down to being happy with yourself and where you are in life. I am blessed to be fortunate enough to be in a career that I really enjoy working in and having a great friend and family support base to keep me going. Surrounding yourself with positive energy and focusing on the good things in life are the best ways to stay upbeat, that and a good dose of chocolate everyday!

Finally Laura if you had any key advice for any model no matter what her shape or size what would it be?

Be true to yourself. Love yourself and your body and show how proud you are of yourself through your work. A good model exudes confidence in her and should be able to convey that to their audience whether it is in print or in person.

I make no apologies in telling you all that the past few weeks have been emotional as I get ready to launch my new business officially. (It’s not plus-size related – it’s for everyone) Setting up a new business is like moving house. So many emotions come into play. Luckily I have not gone on this journey alone. I’ve had support from some amazing people. That kind of ties into what I’m about to write about.

Anyway I’ve been distant I know. The odd Facebook posts, a little twitter banter, but no-where near what I normally do. I just have not had the time.

That said I haven’t been living under a rock. So I know currently my virtual friend Marie Denee (just like another inspirational person Debra Mazda) is reaching out and asking for support. And a little bit of everybody’s time to vote for something they really want and also as a statement that this community can produce ‘star’s that can bridge the gap and relate to any shape or size – ultimately a vote for women and a vote for a damn good reporter.

I really, really want Marie Denee to go to the Vienna Life Ball and cover it for the Huffington Post. I think there has been a lot of talk about why Marie should go. I wanted to bring a more personal element to that. Things I know Marie is too humble to really share.

This may seem OTT and sloppy. But look, I didn’t get to where I am (wherever that is) by doing things half hearted. My heart and soul goes into everything and that includes support for people who have supported me in front and behind the scenes. And trust me when I say, the road is a hard one without true friends to lean on.

This is from my heart

It’s not lost on me the way some people in the plus-size world think I’m a bit of a b*itch. I think those people don’t know me and I mean really don’t know me. I’m always candid. I’m honest. Maybe some of you can relate? Ultimately though I just want the best for people and for people to appreciate the big and the small things people do.

I’m not going for a Sainthood. There are clearly people I cannot relate to or understand in this world, but luckily those people are in the minority. Its people like Marie Denee though who have made me a lot calmer as a person. I pick my battles a lot more carefully than I used to.

So as well as introducing me to finer fashion Marie Denee has also instilled in me a sense of motivation and a calmer thought process. Of course I’m still me (rebel with a cause – ha) I’m just a bit better than I was at biting my lip and getting on with my own thing.

It’s terrible that I can’t remember how Marie and I first connected. She probably does, but I know we’ve collaborated for mutual interviews for our sites as well as been able to guide each other through various things that we’ve individually planned.

Last year though I really discovered the real Marie Denee.

She was launching her online store and she needed some help with the back end of the site and she knew I’d helped others she knew with their sites. I called and we discussed things. I basically had to tell her that something with the coding of her site was stopping something else from working. She was upset, worn out and frustrated. You all know how that feels – when you desperately want something to go right but all the odds seemed stacked. It reminded of the time Julie K got upset about wanting to showcase women in a beautiful way in her photography work. I mentioned it a while back. But it’s the same thing – frustration (albeit for different reasons).

She ended the call totally distraught (more because it wasn’t her fault) and I know she wondered if it was all worth it. But the next day she contacted me again and said she’d made changes and got back on track. Like many of us she needed to have that moment in ‘lost-ville’ in order to realise her dreams and goals were worth it. She has a similar ability to me – to pick herself up, dust herself down and start again.

In no time the boutique was launched. She kept doing her thing – reaching out and connecting with people and seemed to really excel in her blogging and fashion journalism like never before.

I wasn’t really pushing my own blog much back then because I had just taken over supervising two departments temporarily in my old sales job so I really wasn’t aware of what was happening with the blogging community. But low and behold when I did connect with Marie again she was making such amazing strides and was really loving what she was doing and what she was sharing with people.

I was impressed and over time she’s just got better at the technical stuff regarding her site as well as her promotion of it.

Her calmness has also been an inspiration to me. We are as people very different but there are still lots of things I love about the way she deals with situations and people. Of course I’m pretty sure she has her moments, but you know what – we ALL do. Mostly they are bore out of frustration. Everyone can relate to that.

One night during a late night Skype chat Marie related to me that she felt she was losing direction. No single human can say they’ve never had that feeling. I couldn’t understand it at first because she is successful as a blogger and well respected. However when I thought about it I remember and still realise that when you’ve achieved one or two goals you see the sky is the limit. You just have to figure out how to get there. So in essence she was saying, ‘Vanessa, how do I get to the next level? Where should I go? How do I get there?’ I have to say that I was buzzing with ideas and support. Of the many people I know in blogging she’s one of the few who can cross over. You may know people like that? Like you can see their future rich in reward long before they can?

At the end of the conversation she too was excited and buzzing and I’m sure other people have given her some great pick-me-up chats too.

What’s so funny about Marie Denee is the fact you blink and she’s somewhere else conquering a new goal. I LOVE THAT! Lane Bryant, Italian Vogue Curvy, Full Figured Fashion week and now the chance to go to Vienna and cover the Life Ball on the 17th July. Watching her progress is like watching a roller coaster.

I feel in my heart she is an amazing inspiration. Let’s be clear – these opportunities didn’t just fall in her lap. She began as a sales assistant and quit her job to make a living out of fashion writing and have her own store. She’s sacrificed a great deal. Anyone who’s ever quit their job to pursue a niche can relate. Noodles anyone? LOL She’s put herself up for many things and some she’s conquered others not – but always she remains able to keep on keeping on.

I still feel she doesn’t appreciate how great she is. And yes, you can bet I call her out on that sometimes. HA!

So this is the deal my friends and anon readers. I have a wonderful friend who has taught me that fashion comes in all shapes and sizes. She’s taught me to keep on, and she too has supported me when I’ve been in lost-ville.

When people say a vote for a plus size person is a vote for everyone in the plus-size community what they really should say is ‘this is a vote for women no matter what their shape and size. It’s for any woman who’s been told no or you can’t but possess that amazing strength to not let their dreams and goals be thwarted.‘

Voting for Marie during this stage of her career is not a vote for a plus blogger who writes about fashion, it’s a vote for a lady of strength, determination, compassion and immense humility. Someone I’m very proud to call a friend and you may do too.

If you’re inspired by women like this then please spend a little time watching her video. Then go and vote.

You will need to click on her slide and vote 10

Bookmark that page – rinse and repeat until Wednesday 7th Noon EST. Don’t hold off and don’t wait.

Marie has listed her reasons here as well as on the video.

I need to tell you one last thing.

If it wasn’t for Marie Denee and a few other close confidents I would have ended this blog a long time ago. They see my future before I do and are not afraid to reach out and let me know I have something to offer people in whatever I do.

That knowledge and that support is worth my vote.

Thank you Marie Denee. Please know this is truly from my heart.

UPDATE: The competition is now closed. Unfortunately Marie didn’t win, but my goodness, she did really well. The upshot is, more people know about her fantastic work. That’s a good thing, right?

V x

P.S Has Marie Denee inspired you? Why not tell the world in your blogs and add the vote link yourselves. People are inspired by others.

P.P.S Can a Diva get some Kleenex over here, please? Tearing up.

I just wanted to pass on a message from my lovely friend Debra Mazda. I’ve talked about Debra in the past for my old blog radio show (be patient for it to start) and even written an article about her for this website.
She’s a lovely person. One, whom I’ll always have time for.

Please read her message below and go do your thing by voting for her for her own show on the Oprah Now Network. I think the great thing about Debra Mazda is she’s not about dieting. Through her words I went down two dress sizes because I needed to do that for myself. Some others don’t need/want to and physically feel comfortable being a certain weight. I did not. Back problems and the like were a constant reminder that I was not in shape.

You may not totally agree with Debra’s stance on health or weight, but if you’re open to another idea that is not always comfortable with the plus-size community then please read on. It’s not an attack on anyone who’s fat. But there are people like me who have found that they needed to lose some weight in order to feel good.

Now the irony is I’m in a job as a fit model where I have to stay the same weight. But I won’t be in this job forever. At least I know when I’m out of this job I have the tools that Debra Mazda has given me to lose more weight if I wanted to.

The important thing to remember is I’m still maintaining the weight I lost. No diet – just moving. Talking to Debra Mazda was an inspiration.

VOTE FOR DEBRA’S SHOW ON OPRAH

A message from Debra:

I have auditioned for Oprah’s Now Network and the video is up and running. I need to get as many votes as possible, from everyone everywhere. Your vote will be a vote for WOMEN all over the world, as this will not be MY show but OUR show.

I was thrilled to meet Em, from ‘Oh The Places You’ll Go,’ today for the first time after I’d finished at Asos. We found a lovely little place to share drinks, chat and plan lots of exciting things. She’s every inch as adorable in real life as she is in her blog and totally down to earth – my kind of Gal.

We’ve both got a busy few months ahead so it was so nice to actually meet up before the madness starts.

What did we talk about? Well fashion of course plus, beauty, perceptions of plus-size women, size acceptance and our creative businesses. We also shared some insights on how we blog which was really interesting. Meeting up with fellow bloggers is always insightful.

As I said, we also came up with some cool ideas for some collaborative work too.

She’s simply fab!!! I heart!

Thanks Em for a fab evening of girly chatter and thought provoking musings.

News on my eBook and Brand New Online Fashion Store

Vansters gather round! I just want to let you know things will go a little quiet on here for a few days. Here’s why :-

1. I’ll be reviewing a brand new fashion store which has had a bricks and mortar outlets in the UK for a while but is now going ONLINE!!! I’m giving them lots of props because I have bought their clothing for myself and Louis for a while and also because they are Midlands based – and of course I’m Midlands born and bread. I have to show my support – it’s in the birth clause of being born in the centre of the UK, ha – but seriously I’ve always enjoyed shopping in their high street store here in my home town because the products are always good and the customer service has been also.

Yes they do obviously do plus-size clothing and yes its great fashion and high hotness! All that being said I will give you an unbiased review of their new online store to see if it cuts the mustard as well as give you a guide on ordering from them as well as their delivery and customer service. And oh yes, my lovelies, their will be new pictures and style guides.

2. I’m putting the finishing touches to one of my eBooks which will be on my site very soon . I was actually going to release this one later, but I’ve really made great headway with it. The good news is it’s going to be FREE! It’s a thank you to everyone who enjoys my site. The topic? Fashion & Beauty of course but with some insider tips on how to get the best bargains both on and off the net! As someone who’s worked in retail I know my stuff in both fashion and beauty- so I hope you’ll take the opportunity to download my free guide and enjoy its contents so you can style wi$ley.

3. Get a Grip will be back! I was going to put it all on a separate site but that seems silly since most people who signed up for a free newsletter for ‘monetizing their niche knowledge’ are members of my main free newsletter. That said, I am going to be sending more details of helpful tips via the niche knowledge newsletter when I finalise things on this blog.

It all seems like a very good excuse to tweak my header again (I know – again!) – but at this point I’m trying to think of a catchy title that will incorperate the fact that my stylish and beautiful visitors here at vanessareece.com have also got great knowledge in various niches and may want to – at some point monetize that. Any ideas?

4. If you’re a member of my free fashion and beauty newsletter to the right of this column you could have a chance to win one garment of your choice from ASOS Curve!! The newsletter comes out soon. DO NOT MISS THIS!!! Sign Up Now if you haven’t already. The details will not be available on the site – it’s exclusive to newsletter subscribers ONLY.

Shoutouts…

Thanks to the Curve Team for an excellent fun filled fit session yesterday. In between the hilarious, ‘it’s marmalade not jam’, short arms, small head and the Grim Reaper with a light sabre comments (yes it was, ‘let’s make fun of Vanessa’ yesterday – not that I didn’t laugh because it was funny) I can’t express how much fun it is to work with you crazy cats! And thanks to the very handsome male model who made it known he liked fuller figured women in their bra and panties LOL – I will explain all about that in the next Fit Session post. All I can say is, thank you lord for making my Curves!

Marie Denee – There is no need to explain any further – just hit that fancy Curvy Fashionista’s site and give her some love. She’s working her behind off over there and I will be doing a special report on her soon.

Natalie – I really wanted to find the time yesterday to comment on her recent post, ‘Confessions Of a Former Snarker’ but with so much going on I really have not had the time at present. But I wanted to show her some love and praise for her bravery and honesty. I embrace that.

Em - Em got a mention on Anna Scholz facebook (and quite rightly so. Go and look and add Anna as an FB friend) for her newest blog post where she models one of Anna’s pieces from Simplybe.co.uk Note to fashion designers: Never underestimate the power of bloggers to sell your garments.Em’s photos pursueded me to purchase where I may not have done if I had not seem them on someone of similar shape and size. Not everyone agrees with my ethos on that but I have to say that the proof is found on many websites where bloggers have posted outfits and many have been inspired to buy those outfits because if it. Well done to the fashion outlets for recognising that power!

Gwen Devoe – Organizing events is not easy but despite the ups and downs this lady is doing it with style. I have a lot of respect for Ms Devoe who is the founder of Full Figured Fashion Week and with her team at Devoe Signature Events she’s created the most anticipated event in the plus size fashion calendar. It takes a great leader to organise such a huge event and she is. SONSI are sponsoring this amazing event in New York this month. The blogging world of full figured fashion is about to explode! Very exciting.

So see you in a few days and thanks for stopping by

Vx

P.S Beauty UK (they are currently having a site revamp) have released a new eyeshadow and eye-liner combo palette – I’ll be including a make-up tutorial using the palette along with my review of the Lauren Luke make-up book. Once again, giving huge props to Beauty UK’s budget friendly but reliable make-up as I used it this week on a model during a photoshoot. She looked stunning!

Not content with adorning you in metal, Founder and head Chica at, Evil Pawn Jewelry, Faith Evangeline wants to adorn you in this t-shirt. And yes, they are coming in various plus-sizes too.

Faith has mentioned on Evil Pawn’s official Facebook page that she wants to keep the cost to buy the tees as low as possible. Yay!

She also said the reason for this is because if people promote the Evil Pawn range by wearing this shirt they should be thanked by way of keeping the cost to buy it nice and affordable.

You will notice that the scoop neck allows for off the shoulder / one shoulder wear – which I love. I want to buy this nice and big and get the slouchy look.

I love it – I really do. I think it’s individual and I’d wager that it would get a few people asking – wh0, what, where?

Faith said the tees should be hitting her site very soon!!

If you’ve been following my ‘Get a Grip’ series and have been enjoying my knowledge and thoughts within it then here’s the place where we join together and take it to the next level.

I am really excited about this exstention to www.vanessareece.com because it’s going to be based on helping bloggers and non bloggers take the knowledge and expertise they share and take it to the next level. I’m also going to be addressing product selling if you have a product or service you wish to sell.

Knowledge = product / service = sales

I’ve set up a separate newsletter which many of you have already joined and each week I’ll be motivating, inspiring and sharing my knowledge for free on how you can take what you love to do and know lots about, and not only spread the word effectively but package it to sell as a product.

Now most of you share knowledge already for free in your blogs. Without realising it you are allowing your voices to be heard, passing your knowledge to others and gaining interest. But it doesn’t stop there. Oh no!

I realise with some people giving knowledge away for free sits well, but packaging and selling your knowledge doesn’t sit quite so well. I used to be the same, believe me. I thought my knowledge was only something that should be given for free because I worried it wasn’t worth any money at all. It took me a long time to wake up and realise that packaging my knowledge into a saleable product was not wrong. It was no different from me packaging my knowledge in beauty and delivering a service as a make-up artist or consultant and being paid for that.

As you know free does not pay the bills, or get a new item of clothing, a new beauty product or a download of your favourite music off iTunes. It all costs money.

Whilst I’ll always embrace the passing on of a certain degree of knowledge for free I also think at some point one must look at the bigger picture and realise not everyone wants to scout around websites looking for every little detail they need. Why not put your knowledge and the finer details of it into something people can just buy and save them time searching for? If you don’t someone else will.

If I turned around to you and said. ‘Hey I’d like to know how you are able to get sponsors for your website, free clothes or beauty products.’ Well you may think this information is precious because you worked super hard to get to a point where that was possible. If I then said, ‘I’d pay for a good ebook or audio CD where you explain exactly what you did and other useful links that helped you,’ would you be tempted? You know if someone is willing to pay for a service or product it means they are aren’t playing.

I read lots of blogs, facebooks updates and tweets each week and I cannot understand why aside from affiliate marketing and paid site advertisements people do not package some of their key knowledge in a niche and sell it to others. I also see how new businesses who are selling tangible goods don’t utilise the power of social media in building their customer or prospective customer base.

On average I write 12 blog posts a week – that’s like 12 chapters of a book if you think about it. Or possibly a few hours that I could be paid to do guest speaking and demonstrations. The point is I love, love, love having this blog, but I also know I love being paid to share my advice and expertise.

There are lots of behind the scenes work that I do that doesn’t even get mentioned on here but is vital to this site progressing and getting my voice heard. This newsletter will put a lot of what I do behind the scenes into a format you can easily take on board and use yourselves.

Just recently I bought two very different books. One was about mind sets and the other was about make-up. Both authors have readily given their knowledge on these subjects for free elsewhere but they have also packaged it into something that someone interested in that niche of their work can pay for, own and refer to without going through a gazillion site pages to find.

I have done it myself via an eBook on modelling. I know the mistakes I made in setting that up and the successes will be useful to anyone who wants to share their knowledge to people who want to buy it, whether it be from ebooks, audio CD’s, or public speaking.

Knowledge = product / service = sales

Even if you don’t blog but are selling an item or a service the newsletters may just help you in targeting your products to the people who want it.

You each have a voice/skill in a field you love. If you’re ready to embrace that and learn how to make it heard, seen, and purchased then join my free ‘Get a Grip’ newsletter.

If you’re unsure ask yourself why?

Do you feel you have no authority on the subject because you haven’t got the site hits others do?

Do you feel that no one would pay for the knowledge you have?

Do you feel embarrassed to charge for your knowledge?

Do you think your products or service don’t really need much more than a website and a few flyers to spread the word?

The list is endless as to all the reasons why you wouldn’t want to take your knowledge in your niche to the next level.

Yes, it takes time and motivation. But if you have your own website or blog and you regularly post what you think or know on any given subject that gains you visitors then you are on the right path.

If you have a product or service then you have the ability to get a lot more interest in it.

Each week in this newsletter I’m going to share with you tips and advice I’ve found work for me, and some that haven’t, but they may work for you. We are each individual and may not necessary attract the same sort of people to our niche. Conversely we may all attract the same group and this is where identifying a key element on a subject you know lots about can set you apart from another person talking about the same thing.

Once again, look how many fashion and beauty books there are on the market. Look at how many fashion houses there are out there. Each one is delivering key products but they all have their own styles of delivery which attract different people.

Subjects or Objects.

If you know a subject well and enjoy discussing it then there are ways to mold it in your own way that would be appealing for someone to invest money in it and buy that knowledge.

If you supply a service like photography or styling, or maybe make clothes or accessories then your delivery of how you showcase your products is equally as important.

I’ve worked in retail and sales on and off for over ten years and what I know is this – hard sell leads to resentment from your buyer. The more personal approach leads to longevity of custom. Your service or item can look beautiful but are you really connecting with the right people who will not only buy it but also let others know how good it is?

The same goes for blogging. Who reads your site? Do they tell others about it? What about people who aren’t in your social media circle? How have they found your blog? Are you well versed in your area of blogging? The list goes on.

Our Journey

I didn’t come to this amazing ‘A-ha’ moment on my own. Oh no, I have found some amazing sites that I’ll share with you on each newsletter, plus give a shout out to people who have given me amazing advice about how best to share my knowledge and products and make money from them.

Once we start this journey within my newsletter I’m going to be asking for feedback and if anyone has any success stories then share them. I’ll share it in the newsletter so people can check out your site, product and service.

The reasons why I’m starting this new journey (or re-starting it I should say) is because I truly believe that we need to share success as we go. This will be explained in the newsletter.

I’ll also encourage you to think outside your normal mindset to make yourself more comfortable with your worth. There is a way of telling people you have something amazing to offer and ways that don’t always work in a certain niches.

You will see over the next month or so I will begin to place things on my site that are worth something to someone. I will share how I’m doing it, how I’m getting along and how I’m practically and theoretically dealing with my new adventures. All these things as well as juggle parenthood, family, fixed work obligations – the whole nine yards.

Over time the newsletter will also contain personal video links, podcasts and picture tutorials that will help you.

But why are you giving this newsletter with all your knowledge in for free, V?

Let me explain. I’d like to build this mailing list up and help people to accomplish things they’ve been told or thought for so long they couldn’t. I ask that if you learn something during the progression of the newsletter you simply share the link with someone who you feel would also be interested. They too can sign up, learn, share and do!

Not all my niche knowledge (I have a lot of niches) will be in these newsletters but a good fair amount to get you motivated and start your journey will be. You don’t have to search a million sites to find out what I can tell you in weekly newsletters. Plus, I’ve learned over time that baby steps are better than big ones. I want you to be able to consume the information in bite size pieces so you don’t feel overwhelmed.

Your success inspires and motivates me even more – which is a win win situation for us all. I want to be able to say you know what, this person has taken my knowledge and is using it – look what they can do.

Take a look at a recent blog post by someone my words have helped motivate. I don’t know this lovely young lady, but she has found use from what I’ve talked about so far and I thank her for sharing that on her website. Please take a look.

http://catsandchocolate.wordpress.com/2010/05/27/food-for-thought/

So now click here and fill in the form, then confirm your email address when you get the confirmation email. Remember this has nothing to do with my regular monthly blog newsletter. This is separate and only for people who now feel they want to learn more about taking their niche to the next level. And if you’re struggling to identify your niche still join up because I’ll be talking about that too. Even if you’re very successful and have a product or blog which does well I still would encourage you to join, because remember – even I am a customer. The customer’s perspective is extremely useful to business owners!

Look forward to styling your minds!

This is a great post, Vanessa! I’ve read it all but probably not digested it yet. It’s a lot of food for thought as I seem to be struggling professionally – I’ve been trying to get a career in media for the past ten years, but it’s very difficult to stay afloat and as a result I feel I have no core knowledge on anything specifc…

Sorry, enough rambling about my life! It’s definitely a great post and I look forward to the next! xx

Thank you for sharing V, the stories and your reasons for sharing them are very important and powerful. I am loving this series and am feeling very inspired by it.
Ok so the homework
I am a great story teller because I know how to use it to be relate able and to help people with their problems. I can take any situation and relate it to a moment in my life to show understanding and am always willing to share my experiences to help others or sometimes just to entertain others

Hi V, the series you have written is brilliant – very inspiring and encouraging. Sometimes I forget that it takes time to get where you want to be, and that though I am worried about money, I have found my voice in writing.

I am a great writer. I write fiction and non fiction alike and have discovered my voice within writing – both on my blogs, doing a creative writing diploma and writing short stories. It’s very hard to actually say that yes, I am a great writer, because like you say, we are taught to be falsely modest. Especially girls and women. We shouldn’t be afraid of being proud of our achievements.

My other non fashion blog is http://catsandchocolate.wordpress.com – I write about life, books, deafness and feminism. I’ve been inspired by a great many people myself – I always thought that was what blogrolls are for, to spread the word and love!

Thanks for being so honest and inspiring xxx

This is a very thought provoking series V.

I am good at cooking/baking. I know this because I always get good feedback from my eats and bakes.

I am also a kind person. I am thoughtful. Why am I? because I believe in being “nice”. It costs nothing!

this was seriously awesome.

the homework is going to take some time for me (i’ve been in a weird place lately) but i’m so glad you shared this.

I loved this blog!! Not just because I was mentioned LOL! incredibly insightful and warm – thank you *huge hugz*

And I’m good at writing, loving people and making people happy. I’m growing into my voice of command – I think its a journey that pretty much teaches us something at every turn.

In the spotlight today is the amazing Faith Evangeline or The Boadicea of Jewellery, as I’ve affectionately named her.
Faith’s passion for jewellery making is evident in her work as her business, Evil Pawn Jewelry continues to produce some of the most inspirational and eye catching pieces on the market. You just know if you wear one of Evil Pawn’s necklaces, rings, bracelets, earrings, or hair jewellery you’ll be asked, ‘hey, where did you get that?’ such is its individuality . No detail is overlooked.

As I progress in my pursuit to connect with inspiring women, who pursue their passion and deliver something to the world that is unique how could I not sit down and speak to Faith about her business, Evil Pawn Jewelry and her continued dedication to adorn the world in metal!

Faith Evangeline

As you’ll see, it is more than her business, it is her life force! Ladies and Gentlemen, I present Faith Evangeline, founder of Evil Pawn Jewelry.

Faith, I am honoured beyond belief to finally connect with you! How’s it going?

Life is good! I am so excited to get to connect with you girl! You rawk my sox!

Ha. I love it! Thanks, and likewise.
So I’m going to ask you a whole heap of questions that you’ve probably already answered a million times, because there are a lot of people who don’t know about your amazing work or you as a business woman, so grab yourself a beverage, get comfy, let’s rock (and roll)!

I’ve never been more ready! SHOOT!

You have to excuse me if I sound overly excited but my friends will vouch for the fact I’m into my accessories and the more flamboyant and different it is, the better! Reading your bio I realize you love it, breathe it and sleep it too – to your core! Where did this passion for individual jewellery begin?

FIRST OF ALL, excitement for personal adornments RAWKS OUT LOUD, lady! I love it! And you ask me where it began?? SINCE BIRTH! I have always loved personal adornments. I have a picture of me from the 3rd grade. I’m wearing rings on every finger! I still have designs I’d did at age seven! It’s my life force!

I read you are a third generation jeweller so jewellery making runs in the family? How old were you when you made your first piece of jewellery and what was it?

I was into making jewellery at a very early age. Beads and clay moulds were my spare time invasion! I even used Play-Doh to make bracelets and rings! It helped me escape some bad childhood situations. I was also always inspired by music to paint and create wearable art. My first real piece I made from scratch was a ring inspired by a Today is the Day album cover called ‘In the Eyes of God’

Your work echo’s a bygone era which showcases a certain strength and individuality that women today are trying to push as the norm. But there is also a delicate edge to it also. People often forget the greatest and bravest people in our past have been women. You work in my mind is offering women something strong, passionate, alluring and brave. Am I on the right path trying to describe your work here?

Yes you are, my designs are bold and reflect individuality. With every piece I want to inspire a greater being in us all. I want to invoke your personal power and uniqueness as a human, by your expression though the way you adorn yourself. Cookie-cutter and mass production is dead.

When I mentioned to my friends I was going to interview the lady who owns Evil Pawn Jewelry their eyes popped out at the name – it’s like they didn’t even hear the jewelry part of the name, it’s certainly commands further investigation and attention. What made you pick that name for your company Faith, the shock factor or something much deeper?

OMG! No shock factor, I swear! See, my company and my creations are everything I am; my past, my present, my being. When I first started the actual company I had just gone through an experience that changed me forever.

I had a friend that I always felt I wanted to be close to but there was something in the way. It seemed that competition, cattiness, drama, he-said-she-said, petty childish crap that girls unfortunately experience growing up plagued our friendship. Problem was I loved her dearly and trusted her with everything I was. The night before everything went down, we decided we were tighter than sisters and had plans to start a band. We even talked about travelling to a few places we wanted to go and I talked about this weird ‘stalker’ type person that was prank calling my house, egging my car, and leaving notes on my door. Well, I found out she was helping this other girl who hated me do all this nasty stuff to me all along. I felt like it was all fake, our friendship a lie, and that she was an EVIL PAWN in a plot to hurt me. Every naïve flower up in my head died. I really wanted her to have everything she ever wanted and to be everything she ever wanted to be. I guess I thought she wanted the same for me. I am my experience. That hurtful experience named my company and all the sad, angry, and painful energy was used to build something good for myself.

Wow! You know I was thinking that jewellery is like a song. It can have a meaning to the writer but a different meaning to the person who listens to the song. Has anyone ever said that to you or are you thinking I’m crazy?

No, that happens to me all the time. The Caroline Necklace … it’s about body image. I had a family member die from an eating disorder. It’s my amulet. When I feel like my body isn’t ‘good enough’, I put on my Caroline. It’s my amulet against pop culture’s evils toward the female body. It protects me from hearing all that crap and makes me see beauty in everything.

One girl told me she bought it because it reminds her of her Grandma that had passed. It made her feel like her Grandma was with her when she wore it so it became her power piece in a different way than it did for me.

Yes you see I was admiring your Jessica Corset Necklace (which is currently sold out) and I thought if I wore that it would be me expressing the keys to my heart, soul, mind, body and destiny. Yeah I took it to the next level, girlfriend. HA! I totally did. Well actually I took it way deeper as to why they would be around my neck but I’ll save that for another time. But you must get people who get really emotional with what your pieces mean to them. Does that freak you out or do you just embrace it?

I adore it. Feelings from the human experience can get lost in a sea of reality TV, prescription pills, and text messages. Connection to self and others may be the last thing that is sacred and seeing people remember how to feel in a world that is numb is never gonna cause me to freak out. Some people have very little that they can tap into to draw any emotion. When you find those things it’s almost like the clouds part and god looks down at us, remembering we exist. Or vice-versa.

You described yourself as spiritual in an interview I read about you. Is making jewellery where you find you’re most calm and peace? I mean despite the fact that some of your pieces are edgy they seem to be made with a lot of love and calm.

I describe that as ‘Eternal’. A singer sings, a chef cooks, and a mother, mothers. I create personal adornments. It’s not about love or calm. It is me telling a story without saying a word. I can channel all my emotion from a past experience into something tangible. My feelings, thoughts, and memories that cannot be touched are now manifested into reality. Something that we all know is there but cannot touch now is something that is there and can be toughed. That is what art is.

Let’s switch this up a little Faith because I do have a lot of people visit my site because I’ve made a lot of dreams reality. You can relate I’m sure to being told ‘No, you can never achieve that,’ only to find that years later you did. If you could say anything to the people who are in a situation where they feel their dreams are so far away and being thwarted by others, what would it be?

Do not use your creative energy to hate and despise others. Do not use this precious energy to take down those who have taken themselves down. They don’t want you to succeed because they believe they cannot succeed. Breathe it all in, all the people telling you ‘no no no’, all the gossip, all the evil eyes. Breathe it all in at once. Then blow it out. Blow it away. Use your energy for creation. No one can really cloud your vision unless you let them.

Sound advice and I wholeheartedly agree!

So you began your business as a sole trader, i.e you did everything by yourself? When did you get your team together and was it difficult to let go of a little control in respect of the making and the marketing of the items and the business?

I did start Evil Pawn Jewelry as a solo act, but I still have a very small team and want to keep it that way, no matter what. It is difficult to give up some control but when the people who work with you have your best interest at heart and are like family, it is a blessing. Everyone needs help. The busier I have gotten the more I realize it.

Give a shout out to your team? Who’s involved and what do they do?

JD, my husband, the number one supporter of Evil Pawn Jewelry, no matter what!

Catrina – personal assistant and an amazing best friend. I love her for life, she is like no other!

Terry — best rep on this planet and a building block in Evil Pawn’s success.

Candy, Lora, and Trish, merch team reps … you work so hard and you are loved for putting up with my pickiness! (It’s a half mm off! I MUST FIX IT! LOL!)

Bill —editor, photog, best friend. You are so much more than most people will ever really know.

Chad — graphics, fliers, anything computer designed … he is the man!

Hair and make-up ‘A-Team’ / BFF crew, Marty and Gretchen, you have decorated every room of my mind with flowers.

Aunt Victoria, who doesn’t have an Evil Pawn job, but there were two times in my life I thought I was gonna cry my life out through my eyes and she brought me back to breathe with a flick of her wisdom. My business grew both times with just a 30-minute call to you. <3

I was chatting to my business coach, Kimmoy, recently and she said that many people have amazing ideas for business, but they don’t market them correctly, particularly online. It’s not just about using twitter, Facebook, MySpace and posting updates is it? There has to be some human/friendly connection with those that love your work or those that are interested in finding out more. What do you think?

I think this world is obsessed with money, money, and more money. If I can make jewellery for the rest of my life, then I will. I do not need millions or billions of dollars. When I sell jewellery, I use the money to make more jewellery. If I make the same amount of money as my assistant or rep for the rest of my life, that is fine with me. I know what I need: family, friends, and art. Too many people sacrifice their dreams in order to hoard pills of money. Why not split the remaining profit with your team? Why not use as much as you can to keep creating? It’s not a business; it’s me creating art and if someone buys it, I share the profit with my team for helping me. Most everything goes back into making something new. A car won’t work, just because it gets a new coat of paint once a year. If the engine doesn’t purr and if the petrol doesn’t get replenished, the only one wanting to drive will be the paint job.

I think as well it’s good to be honest with fans of your work. For instance, on my site it’s not just about what I do as a model or a make-up artist, or even a writer, it’s also about showing people I am human. Some people say it’s too much, but I say that is what has kept people interested in me for over five years now as someone in the public eye. I can’t stand robotic online communication – it’s boring and cold. What are your thoughts?

It is important to keep it real. The main thing is to never let it become a ‘show’. When it’s gone there, then it runs by itself on speculation and tabloid-style mugshot covers. There is a big difference but the gap gets closer every day. If it’s you then it’s you and it will never matter what someone else says.

I think also that people are attracted to the strength of people who are actually keeping it real. I can understand boundaries like family etc, but when you’ve had a bad day or need to explain a change of direction it shouldn’t be seen as a weakness to tell people about it. I am drawn to that strength, in showing the people who follow ones work there is a human side; that in effect you’re just like them. I think for you as well you’re selling something so personal to people, something that may become a keepsake, heirloom in the future or a memory.

Who doesn’t want to know someone with a human face poured so much emotion into designing and making that?

I agree. Nothing is sadder than a celebrity slapping their name on something to make it sell when they had very little or nothing to do with its creation. If you want something to be from you then it should bleed. If it doesn’t bleed, than it’s not human. The walls of over-manufactured jewellery in department stores and super centres reflect to me nothing but a filler of watered down art.

I feel like I’m in a therapy session, but not in a bad way. HA! I feel your work makes me address certain things. I’m feeling very cleansed right now. But see, see what emotion jewellery can stir? Tell me I’m not alone, Faith! LOL

It is a cleansing! Like a baptism. To expel everything on your mind that weighs on you, and create something new that releases you; that is my high.

Ok let me focus again on the business side and ask you a question that people always kick you if you don’t ask a business woman. How important is the marketing of the product been in the success of your business?

Of course it’s important, but it can’t be done in a fake, sterile way. Show people who you are and what you do; if they like it, they will tell their friends. If not, at least you were yourself and that’s all that matters.

In terms then of the product and the raw material cost; does it pay to research your raw material suppliers over dependable suppliers, because as I’m learning with my involvement in the fashion world the two are not always the same?

I always go with the best material. If it’s late or higher dollar, who cares! Your customers are the ones who should get the best possible product.

You sell your work online as well as bricks and mortar stores. Explain the process involved in selling your jewellery to third party suppliers and did you actively pursue that outlet or did people come to you?

It is a little of both: online and 33 stores. The boutiques, tattoo shops, and salons that sell Evil Pawn Jewelry are like family to me. Some found me, some I found. Either way, I won’t sell my jewellery to a store that won’t represent it the way I’d like. Any place I send my peeps RAWKS!

Forgive me Faith while we go ‘wall street’ but did the economic downturn affect your business at all and if so how did you cope with that as a business woman? I mean, I consider your work luxury and that’s the first thing people curtail when there is an economic downturn right?

No, business got better. Why? F**k Walmart. F**k Target. F**k all these rich ass CEO businesses crapping on art; raking in piles of money while paying their employees next to nothing. F**k their money and their corporate America smile. People have stood up against the greed of these machines. I have copyrighted art that stores try to rip off in the form of plastic and wire bows. Really? My business increased because I think people are realizing their money is worth a little more to them than a cheap factory knock-off.

You seem to be going from strength to strength at this point – there is a lot of good energy around you. Do you feel it?

Always. There are some beautiful people that have passed through this world but are still with me and guiding me. I am blessed to have beautiful people living around me too. I was set up in this life to fail. I was born in the mud. I prevailed against some serious odds. Good energy is my clothing.

Tell everyone what you’re going to be doing with Evil Pawn Jewelry in the next six months?

I am ‘spreading my wings and flying’. You will see why that makes sense in the next month?

Okay, put me down for very excited with sugar, doll!

You have a lot of ‘coming soon’ pictures on pages of your site, like the book for instance? Will there be a Faith Evangeline or Evil Pawn Jewelry book soon?

We did a coffee table book with pictures of all my creations. Sold them and never printed more! All of that got put on the back-burner, I mean you can’t really make a final documentation in mid-orgasm.

HA!!!!! That is so true. Every project for me is a work in progress too!

Let’s talk about key pieces of your range. I’m drawn to the Nadjia Necklace, Demonia Necklace
The Beverley Necklace, and of course the Jessica Necklace and in regards to your rings the Heart Locked Ring is my favourite. Some of these are out of stock so do you think they will come back in another shape or form?

The Nadjia Necklace is one of a kind; when it’s gone, it’s gone. The Demonia was originally pearl in 2003, then a turquoise and pearl version came out in 2005. Now it is black. She comes back from time to time, but always limited.

The Beverly was a black faceted bead at one time. Now it is in pearl mainly because of a Photo shoot I did (adorned) for my hairdresser’s salon. The salons theme called for pearls!

The Heart Locked Ring was a finding piece. It won’t be back. Some come back and some become memories.

You seem to really embrace the term ‘sisterhood’ as I do too. I believe women educating and supporting other women is so vital and important. Aside from the emotional benefits of this how to you use ‘sisterhood’ in your business.

Woman definitely got lost somewhere in the fight for this and the fight for that. The feminist heroes of the ’70s seem to be few and far between. The very word ‘feminist’ has been so misused and the definition even twisted. The moment we realize that every channel on TV, every MEN/WOMEN divider, every stereotype, every dream of wedded bliss, and little white picket fences have all been lying to us, maybe we all can band together.
I am a big supporter of groups like Planned Parenthood and other organizations that rally for women’s healthcare rights. It started with the machine and trickles all the way down to little girls in grade school. We do not treat ourselves well and it needs to stop. My rule at any Girl Revolution Party I have held at my house is, ‘Bring something to say not to tell’ … that is a quote by the lovely Tairrie B.

If we all join together and keep that rule golden, we may just make it another decade.

I’m going to say it out loud since I’ve never been one to hold my tongue, (diplomacy is really hard from me - HA) – ‘A woman that walks alone and pretends she needs nothing from another sister may not fail, but she will be a lonely if she makes it to the top.’ Do you agree with this statement, Faith?

It is lonely at the top. That saying is as true now as it was decades ago. Jealousy, cattiness, and insecurities keep people from being happy for others. One thing I have learned is be careful, very careful. Find your friends and keep them close. There are so many people that were at one time close to you but now they hate you and they don’t even know why. No one can go alone, but it is unfortunate that armies have weak links. Thousands could be millions. Hundreds could be thousands. This is why so many chose the lonely path, because they have been hurt too many times. It’s important to have good intentions at all times and good will prevail.

You know why I said it? Because there are far too many women who think they don’t need any help and if they don’t fail (which I hope they don’t because it’s bad karma to want someone to fail) I just think they aren’t reaching their full potential. I see this in business and it frustrates me. You must see this yourself?

Yes, I see it all the time. They believe their glory is in someone else’s demise. The truth is, when your friends and people in your community do well, you do well. It takes a village, in more than one way.

I have nickname for you Faith, The Boadicea of Jewellery. You’re kind of a warrior fighting for individuality with your army (team) Yeah, it works for me! But a great army or team progresses with their leader almost intuitively. What are your thoughts on this?

It’s awesome! I hope that all women will fight for individuality, sisterhood, and their rights. It’s time for us all to stand up and be heard!

Faith I’m so happy we got together but I’m going to let you go and be creative. But tell me before we part what inspires you on a daily basis to keep striving to be the best jewellery maker you can be?

It saved me. Now I can use it to save others. It is the person I was meant to be.

Thanks for your time Faith! Good Karma to you always!

Thank you doll! I appreciate the love!
